Power & Performance

The Ford Edge significantly beats out the Highlander when it comes to performance. Its turbocharged engine cranks out 245 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the Highlander's 185 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. This is a huge difference that results in a much more enjoyable ride behind the wheel of the Edge. The Edge also gives you several other engine options for an even more powerful drive.

If fuel economy is important to you, the Edge also outperforms the Highlander with 21 city and 29 highway mpg compared to the Highlander's 20 city and 24 highway mpg. The Edge is ready to keep your time at the pump to a minimum.

Both vehicles use a six-speed automatic transmission to offer smooth rides. The Edge gets a boost with its standard paddle shifters that let you take over gear selection with ease.

Size & Design

The Highlander is larger than the Edge, but that doesn't mean that it uses its space efficiently. The Edge actually has considerably more cargo space with its seats up than the Highlander. The Highlander is a third-row SUV so its cargo volume is limited unless you want to sacrifice some seating. Ultimately, both have their strong points, but we think that the Edge gives you a better balance between seating, comfort, and overall size.

Although the looks boil down to personal preference, we think that the Edge has a much more appealing silhouette and grille than the Highlander. The squared shape of the fascia gives you a powerful stance that demands a second look, while the Highlander's rounded stance makes it look a little more like a large station wagon than an SUV.

Technology & Features

Technology is hugely important to keep your passengers engaged on long drives. The Edge comes standard with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility so you can easily integrate your smart devices into your drive. The Highlander does not offer these capabilities on its base model.

The Edge continues to bring extra standard features like keyless start and a more supportive driver seat. The Highlander doesn't give you these excellent features without pricey upgrades, so we would definitely recommend the Edge for people who want some tech features at a great value.

Safety

Both vehicles have performed very well on crash tests, so you can feel confident driving both of them during tough conditions. The Edge gets an advantage with its impressive drive and control, while the Highlander doesn't quite give you the same capabilities on the road.

The Edge's standard voice command technology also keeps you from getting distracted on the road, so if you find yourself taking phone calls or having people try to get in touch with you often, the Edge is the way to go.
